Abstract:

Procedures for quantitative characterization of workpiece and die coatings for isothermal forging of titanium alloys are described. The procedures include the characterization of friction, adhesion, chemical reaction and coating accumulation properties of each of these types of coatings using actual and simulated forging operations. Results obtained from use of these evaluation techniques are to be correlated with the chemical composition of the coating substances so that the optimum coating can be selected or developed. The end result for use of these techniques will allow the formulation of a scientific basis for these types of forging operations. Author
