Abstract:

Specialized nonlinear crack tip finite elements which include the amplitude of the plastic singular solution as an additional unknown are investigated to determine their capability to directly predict the J-integral for cracked elastoplastic bodies without recourse to numerical evaluation of the J-integral over arbitrarily chosen paths. The special elements are used in conjunction with conventional 12-node quadrilateral isoparametric elements. Power hardening and multilinear representations of the nonlinear stress-strain curve are considered for both deformation and incremental theories of plasticity.
