A UV Photoelectron Spectroscopic Investigation of the Bonding in Some Tri-, Tetra-, and Pentacoordinated Dialkylamino Compounds of Chromium, Molybdenum, Niobium, and Tantalum.

Helium I ultraviolet photoelectron spectra UPS are reported for the compounds CRNPr23, CrNEt24, MoNME24, MoNEt24, NbNMe25, and TaNMe25. The interpretation of the UPS of the paramagnetic dialkylamide, CrNPr23, was aided by a scattered wave calculation on the model compound CrNH23. In contrast to previous UPS work on CrNSiMe323, ionizations are detectable from the metal MOs of CrNiPr23. The UPS of the tetracoordinate molybdenum compounds, MoNR24, RMe, Et are in excellent agreement with X-ray crystallographic data on MoNMe24 and exhibit a low energy ionization approx. 5.3 eV which is attributable to electron ejection from the essentially pure Mo 4dx2-y2 MO of b1 symmetry. The pentacoordinate compounds, MNMe25, MNb, Ta exhibit very similar UPS and therefore appear to be isostructural in the vapor phase.
