Abstract:

Insertion of two to four nickel atoms into polyborane cages has been accomplished by reactions of metal reagents with the B5H8- and CH32C2B4H5- ions in tetrahydrofuran followed by air oxidation. Treatment of NaB5H8 with NiBr2 and NaC5H5 generates closo-1,6-Eta 5-C5H52Ni2B8H8 and closo-1,7-Eta 5-C5H52Ni2B10H10, and the reaction of NaB5H8 with Eta 5-C5H52Ni and sodium amalgam gives closo-Eta 5-C5H54Ni4B4H4 and nido-Eta 5-C5H54Ni4B5H5. Nickelocene and Na CH32C2B4H5 yield closo-Eta 5-C5H52Ni2CH32C2B4H4 and nido-Eta 5-C5H52Ni2CH32C2B5H5. The new compounds were structurally characterized from their 11B and 1H pulse Fourier transform NMR, ir, and low-and-high-resolution mass spectra, and an X-ray crystal structure determination on Eta 5-C5H54Ni4B4H4.
