The likelihood ratio techniques for conducting cross-correlation processing under conditions of unknown signal and noise spectral properties are investigated. The forms of the likelihood ratio processors are presented and their statistics developed. The statistics, in the form of receiver operating characteristics, are used to compare the likelihood ratio techniques against a normalized cross correlation. The likelihood ratio techniques are shown to be advantageous if the spectral properties of either the signal or the noise vary across the processing bandwidth. Author
