Abstract:

Studies of ship resistance have generated concepts and methods of importance for all of fluid mechanics for example the understanding of the origin of fluid resistance in its various components model testing as a science similitude laws in testing and analysis group velocity in dispersive systems asymptotic integration and thin body theory. Here, developments including the earliest are surveyed and placed in some historical perspective. The development and current status of theory are surveyed critically, concluding with Slow Ship Theory, and Numerical Hydrodynamics.
