Abstract:

Future exploration and exploitation of the ocean depends on the development of new vehicles capable of operating at great depths. One of the critical systems in such a vehicle is the buoyancy system. Without an adequate and dependable buoyancy system, the vehicle once submerged would not be able to return to the surface. Candidate materials for buoyant syntactic foams are reviewed.
