Abstract:
An analysis was performed to determine range accuracy for echo ranging, bottom-bounce sonar systems. The model for analysis assumes isovelocity conditions and a sloping bottom. The range to the target is determined from a knowledge of the echo travel time and measurement of the required environmental parameter e.g., water depth, bottom slope. The results indicate that the range error due to bottom slope is independent of range for small bottom slopes. The range errors due to inaccuracies in measuring the bottom depth and slant range are also examined and the rms error in range is determined for a representative environment. Author
