The objective of the work performed under this contract was to demonstrate selective reinforcement of a cast magnesium housing by the use of high-modulus FP fibers via casting technology. A series of housing element specimens were designed, fabricated, and tested to evaluate the application of state-of-the-art technology to the fabrication of a full-scale, fiber-reinforced metallic transmission housing. Several typical housing section specimens were fabricated and tested to determine material properties. These properties were compared with predicted values to develop the technology and analytical capability for the application of selective reinforcement of a full-scale helicopter transmission housing, with the final objective of reducing system deflections, noise, and vibration.
