The concept of shock wave instability leading to shock pressure amplification is investigated with respect to materials properties and thermodynamic equilibrium. It is concluded that a materials property requirement negative macroscopic Grueneisen parameter associated with single-pass pressure amplification is inconsistent with the amplifying medium being in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. A resulting interpretation, for inert media, is that such amplifying states are metastable and only to be found in materials which are in the process of under-going a phase transition. As a consequence, it is argued that practical shock pulse pressure amplification is not a possibility. Author
