This thesis involves a study of the first-line supervisory position in a search for ways to improve the supervision of operative employees through changes in the work content of the first-line supervisory position. The principal data gathering devise used in this research was a review of available literature on the subject of supervision. Data gathered through the literature search were used to develop a summary description of the first-line supervisory position which is presented as a listing of functions currently performed by first-line supervisors. Having described the first-line supervisory position as it presently exists in many organizations, the logic of management engineering is used to develop alternative approaches to improving the supervision of operative employees. Three alternatives are considered elimination of first-line supervisory positions, a basic first-line supervisory position which is based on performance of a minimum set of essential supervisory functions, and a streamlined supervisory position which is a compromise between the basic supervisory position and the current first-line supervisory position.
