Abstract:

Acute respiratory disease ARD surveillance studies as conducted during fiscal year 1978 and for the past 15 years before at CONUS training Forts indicate that ARD continues to be the principal cause of morbidity at military training units in CONUS. These studies have been effective in revealing the first signs of oncoming epidemics to provide early warnings as indicators for vaccine administration. Vaccine prophylaxis has been our most efficacious tool. These surveillance studies were performed on hospitalized basic combat trainees BCTs at 9 BCT Forts, and on hospitalized and quartered patients at 1 Navy Training Center-San Diego, and 1 Advance Individual Training Fort AIT.
