Abstract:

Two basic applications of superconductivity are described. The first involves the use of Type II superconductors in magnets, motors and generators to improve efficiency and reduce weight and volume. The second relates to the use of superconducting junctions in magnetometers and gradiometers to provide instruments with very high sensitivity. Possible defence use of superconducting materials in these areas is outlined. A brief review of superconductors and their properties is also given. Author
