Hole Statistics in Dense Random Packing.

The structure of dense random packings of hard spheres has been investigated in terms of the polyhedral holes between the spheres, using both all triangular-faced polyhedra called deltahedra, and local arrangements allowing three- and four-edged faces. Two models were analyzed The mechanical model of Finney, and the computer-generated model of Bennett. The number and sizes of the sites for small interstitial spheres were also calculated for both models. The structural units described and the results may be applicable to the structure of liquid metals and metallic glasses. Author
