A nonlinear theory for solving partially cavitating cascade problems was formulated in two different types of input data set-ups, one specifying cavitation number and the other the cavity length. The second method was necessary to find a unique solution because the cavity length has two different values for a specified cavitation number in some blade geometry cases. This fact, together with the investigation of detailed pressure distributions on the upper wetted part of the blade, explained the unsteady cavity phenomena previously reported in some experiments. Suggestions were made on how to avoid the occurrence of the unsteady partial cavity phenomena when one designs fluid machinery used in a partially cavitating regime. Author
