Abstract:

A linear theory for the behavior of pressure-stabilized arches is derived and solutions to the resulting equations are obtained for uniform and concentrated loading for both simply supported and fixed-end restraints. The concentrated load solution is in the form of Greens Function for application to more general loading situations. An experimental investigation of the behavior of pressure-stabilized arches is described, including measurement of fabric stiffness in addition to arch loading. Experimental determinations of the deformation and load-carrying capacity of several arches are correlated with predictions from the theory. These correlations establish the usefulness of the theory was a design tool.
