Abstract:
The Wilmore Dam is a masonry-gravity structure approximately 800 feet long with a maximum height of 40 feet from the downstream toe. Based on evaluation of the conditions as they existed on the dates of inspection June 7 and 12, 1978 and as revealed by visual observations, the condition of Wilmore Dam is assessed to be good. The spillway does not have the recommended capacity to pass the probable maximum flood without overtopping. However, the dam is a masonry structure, and overtopping by the probable maximum flood would not significantly affect the stability of the dam. Therefore, the spillway capacity is considered to be adequate. However, during unusually heavy runoff, when overtopping might occur, an around-the-clock surveillance plan should be implemented to detect possible problems, such as rapid erosion of the abutments. It is recommended that the owner should develop a formal warning system to alert the downstream residents in the event of emergencies.
