Abstract:

A visible to far infrared imaging converter has been developed by Martin Marietta Corporation. The 2.58-inch diameter device employs a thin blackened membrane housed in an evacuated chamber. A visible scene or test pattern is focused on the membrane through a glass window, generating a corresponding thermal pattern viewable through an Irtran II window on the back side. Key parameters measured were time constant of less than 20 ms, limiting resolution of about 4 cymm, and conversion efficiency of 1.7 mWsq cmC. The converter survived temperature, shock and vibration tests. Data confirm the value of the device as a dynamic simulator and test tool for infrared instruments. Author
