Abstract:

This pamphlet defines the analytical steps collectively called logistic support analysis LSA. LSA is usually associated with activity surrounding the development of a major new weapons system. The objectives and procedures described in this pamphlet are not confined to this narrow limit they are equally valid for other types of materiel as well as non-major procurements such as off-the-shelf or modified commercial items. Throughout this pamphlet analysis activities are related to the conventional life-cycle timing of events. It should be recognized that many major programs do not follow this conventional model. The trend toward expanding validation phase effort is well established and results in earlier definition of system configuration. It is essential on these programs, as on all programs, for LSA activities to be paced by the design status. Therefore, many of the LSA actions normally assigned to the full-scale development phase actually must be performed in the validation phase. If these actions are not taken during validation there will be little opportunity for their successful completion during a foreshortened full-scale development phase.
