Abstract:

Since it was shown that it is theoretically possible through coding to achieve reliable communication at rates below channel capacity, much work in the field of coding theory was centered on finding and applying various suitable coding and decoding techniques for memoryless channels. One such technique is convolutional coding, shown to be quite cost effective in terms of error correcting capability provided for a given equipment complexity level. The convolutional encoding operation is deterministic and thus quite easily implemented. The decoding of convolutional codes, on the other hand, must provide correction of random errors made in transmission and thus is a design problem with an underlying statistical nature. To approach such a problem one ideally would like to apply statistical estimation theory techniques directly and thus derive an optimal estimator decoder.
