A new theory of steady rectilinear motion of a ship in a calm sea is presented. This theory is based on a new integral equation for the velocity potential of the flow casued by the ship. Two outstanding features of the integral equation are that it is valid both on the hull surface as usual and in the flow domain, and that it immediately provides explicity approximations for the velocity potential. First and second approximations are given and discussed in some detail. Author
