Analytical Predictions of Boundary-Layer Transition in a Heated Flow Tube.

This report documents a complementary analytical study to the Colorado flow-tube experiments. An improved method for analyzing boundary-layer transition in the flow tube has been developed. The method includes the effects of transverse curvature and upstream contraction on the boundary-layer development, coupled with an iterative technique to account for the displacement thickness correction to the pressure distribution in the flow tube. A series of calculations has been performed to simulate the flow-tube experiment, a heated test section with one unheated section. Further calculations indicate that a significant improvement of the tube performance may be obtained by heating of the extension tube.
