Abstract:

A security kernel is an isolated, protected, and highly reliable mechanism for providing information access controls within a computer system. Certain hardware features are important for an effective security kernel implementation. In this report the important architectural features are identified, and an evaluation of commercially available minicomputer systems for their support of the important features is presented. The evaluation covers minicomputers offered by the following vendors MODCOMP, Data General, General Automation, Varian, Prime, Digital Equipment Corporation, Honeywell, IBM, Interdata, and Hewlett-Packard.
