A theoretical study was made of swing-pad bearings with small imperfections. The main conclusions are 1 bearing performance will depend greatly on the imperfections in the bearings swing-pad bearings may have to be manufactured to very small tolerances to be reliable 2 swing-pad bearings are not significantly better than tilt-pad bearings under moderate load conditions and 3 under severe conditions in which the bearing pads frequently contact the moving surface, the swing-pad bearing will perform better than a tilt-pad bearing. Agreement between theory and experiment is only qualitative at best, so these conclusions cannot be considered final. Author
