Abstract:

This report pertains to the feasibility of developing a Stratospheric Measurement System, which is a key element of the FAA High Altitude Pollution Program HAPP. Analytical measurement concepts considered during the study for the oxides of nitrogen and ozone are identified and ranked in Tables 3-1 and 3-40, respectively. Scientific ballooning considerations were also examined in the main study to the extent necessary to determine overall feasibility of developing a Stratospheric Measurement System SMS. The conclusion of the study is that there exists a set of analytical techniques that can be flown on a balloon platform to obtain the specified HAPPSMS measurements. A conceptual design of the integrated system is presented.
