A feasibility study on the use of Lidar in the determination of optical properties under battlefield conditions was undertaken. The study was divided into two main topics, i.e., 1 design an experiment to characterize the optical properties of particulates typical of those encountered under battlefield conditions, 2 determine the parameters of the Lidar or Lidars and auxiliary equipment necessary to determine the particulate optical characteristics. It is concluded that if a single wavelength system is to be employed, the 10.6 micrometers CO2 system is the most promising. Author
