A single-pore cell with a 14-micron spacing is used as an analog of a porous zinc anode and cathode for examinations of surface morphology and reaction profile in 10 M KOH, saturated ZnO. At the anode the dissolution-precipitation mode of ZnO formation is corroborated and the effective depth of reaction penetration is initially 0.09 cm. Structure of the deoposited ZnO film is determine by SEM to be porous with 80 percent porosity. At the cathode, H2 bubbles are found to be related to the initiation and growth of zinc dendrites.
