Abstract:

Aerodynamic heating tests were conducted using a 0.0275-scale model of the space shuttle external tank nose to obtain detailed heat-transfer distributions. Special emphasis was placed on evaluating interference heating around the forward fairing, trays and gaseous oxygen line and brackets. The thin-skin thermocouple technique was used, and data were obtained at Mach numbers 3,4, and 5.5 at free-stream Reynolds numbers of 3.7 and 5.0 million per ft.
