Abstract:

The classic machine repair with spares queueing model can be used for determining the number of repair channels and spares inventory level when the population is homogeneous all units identical. This paper develops a procedure for treating nonhomogeneous populations, specifically, a population with two types of items, each with exponential failure and repair times but with different mean values. Exact solutions are obtained for small population sizes and compared to an approximate procedure using the classical theory. The exact model is essentially a two-stage cyclic queue with two classes of customers and the extension to N stages and M customers is described. A priority discipline is also incorporated into the model and extension to other disciplines, including blocking, is discussed. Author
