Abstract:

Various roles which may comprise the social persona of submariners wife are presented. The roles of wife and single wife are analyzed in terms of the Lebra dimorphic, bimorphic, amorphic classification. Sources of role conflict, ambiguity, and the possibility of role shifts are discussed with a positively valued coping strategy outlined. Self-sufficiency and consistency of role playing in both husband presence and husband absence appear to be effective in offsetting the effects of husbands sea time. Author
