Abstract:

Explosions, progressive cook-offs and fires causing severe damage to equipment and personnel have been reported to occur when large quantities of palletized propelling charges came under attack by enemy forces. This report presents the results of laboratory tests, small and large scale field tests designed to evaluate the effectiveness of modified packaging in improving the cook-off characteristics of 155-mm propelling charges. The results of these tests show that modified packaging can be used to improved the cook-off characteristics of separate-loading propelling charges and limit the extent of damage to multi-pallet stores subjected to direct hits by large caliber HE projectiles.
