During the last decade considerable progress has been made in understanding the self-diffusion of metal atoms on well defined crystal planes. This advance has occurred through the use of the field ion microscope, which makes it possible to visualize individual atoms, and to prepare highly perfect surfaces. With this microscope it is possible to determine by direct observation the mean square displacement of atoms adsorbed at a surface, and thus to derive their diffusion coefficient D from Einsteins relation.
