This report describes the research efforts in five different areas, all related to a better understanding of solid surfaces 1 The analysis of surface structures by low-energy electron diffraction LEED 2 Other research related to LEED such as an improved method of measuring experimentally the angle of incidence of the electron beam in a LEED apparatus 3 An examination of desorption phenomena including a theoretical treatment of thermal desorption mass spectrometry TDS 4 Model calculations concerning the dependence of the spectral intensity upon adsorbate concentration in inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy IETS and 5 Chemisorption and surface reactions.
