Abstract:
A method has been developed which provides a complete description of the energy and population distributions in a laser pumped, metastable polyatomic molecule. Different temperatures are required for each mode and for the translationalrotational degrees of freedom. Good agreement between calculated and measured distributions has been found for CH3F. Vibrational energy for this system tends to accumulate preferentially in the nu 3 C-F stretch vibrational mode. As a result, extremely large population inversions are predicted for CH3F when optically pumped by a CO2 laser. These results are expected to apply to many polyatomic molecules.
