Abstract:

This report summarizes the natural resources conservation efforts, on the part of the Naval Ocean Systems Center, performed during 1975-1977. These efforts were particularly concerned with the federally declared endangered and threatened species and those species that may potentially be so considered in the foreseeable future. The report also describes the military mission on the island, the extensive natural resources, and the physical and cultural resources which also fall within the management efforts of the Natural Resources Program Office. These resources are administered under the jurisdiction of the Natural Resources Management Committee. The committee is comprised of members of the Natural Resources Program Office, federal and state wild life and conservation agency representatives, members of the academic community, as well as representatives of NOSCs military and research personnel. The committee is chaired by the Public Works Officer. The Natural Resources Program Office administers the islands natural, physical, and cultural resources through the Natural Resources Management Plan and cooperates with members of the academic and scientific communities interested in performing unique and meaningful research on the island. Evaluating the results of the conservation efforts on the island would be premature at this time, although indications for recovery of the biotic environment seem promising. Author
