Abstract:
Recently-published data on the speed of sound in water as a function of temperature, salinity, and pressure reveal significant differences from former data. In the present memorandum a number of simple equations are developed from the new data. Sound speeds calculated using these equations are shown to be in agreement with the new data to within 0.1 ms over a wide range of temperatures and salinities at atmospheric pressure, and to within 0.5 ms at great depths. It is also shown that the disagreement between experiments is of such magnitude as not to merit equations any more precise than those developed herein.
