Abstract:
The design and analysis of gun tubes presently proceeds on the basis of the static equations of continuum mechanics. Stresses within the tube wall, for example, are calculated by the classical Lame formula - generally viewed as a conservative design criterion. The advent of high speed computation and mathematical modeling, however, has revealed that dynamic bore expansion during the interior ballistic cycle will create significantly higher wall stresses than those on which the tube design is based. The analytical and experimental results leading to this conclusion comprise the material in the first section of this work.
