Abstract:
In this paper, the scattering of a plane electromagnetic wave by an irregular but cylindrically symmetric dielectric particle is solved by generalizing the original work of Mie. As in the original work, the expansion coefficients of the scattered and interior to the dielectric particle electric and magnetic fields are obtained by satisfying the boundary conditions. Because of the particle irregularity, the expansion coefficients are coupled and form a set of linear equations that must be solved numerically. Both the integral and differential equation approaches are equivalent in analogy to the calculation of the scattering amplitude in quantum mechanics by solving either the Schrodinger or the Lippman-Schwinger equation. Further, both approaches develop into solutions of linear algebraic equations.
