Abstract:
Electroslag remelting of gun steel has been proposed as an alternate manufacturing process because of reported improvements in mechanical properties and potential economic benefits. These improvements are a result of the effective control of the many variables inherent in the process. In order to obtain a uniform microstructure while avoiding piping, porosity and macrosegregation, a unidirectional solidification mode is desired1. This mode of solidification, together with the relatively short holding times of the molten metal, also affects the distribution of second phase particles, for example, it results in a more uniform carbide distribution because the carbides are not allowed to grow in the transverse or longitudinal directions.
