A ferrographic reaction chamber has been constructed to permit the micro chemical identification of wear debris. Techniques including temperature coloring, chemical bluing, dissolution, pretreatment and crystal formation on metal particles have been investigated as potential useful methods for identification of wear debris on ferrograms. Temperature coloring, chemical bluing and crystal formation appear to be most promising of techniques studied, and will be pursued in subsequent effort. Author
