Results of a preliminary survey of possible new IR materials for use out to 4.5-5 micrometers is reported. While some tentative candidate materials are identified, the primary purpose of this report is to demonstrate that ternary and higher compounds provide a significant opportunity for providing improved IR materials over the typical list of known diatomic candidates. Since the pacing need for many new IR systems is thermal shock resistance, emphasis has been given to the possibility of finding materials with low thermal expansion coefficients. Author
