Abstract:

This study was undertaken to determine the impact and savings to accrue from maximum commitment to longer C-5 missions perhaps 15-17 hours using inflight refueling. This was accomplished by reviewing maintenance writeup data for shorter flights versus longer flights. Traditional logistics forecasting techniques are based on the number of flying hours. Therefore, a change in sortie length would not be expected to impact on logistics requirements unless the overall number of flying hours changed. An examination of this relationship was undertaken in this study. It was found that the occurrence of a sortie tends to result in a given number of maintenance writeups regardless of the length of the sortie. Author
