Abstract:

The current state of the art of design, fabrication, and erection techniques of various prefabricated elements for concrete structures are reviewed. Included are precast concrete highway bridges, logging bridges, railway bridges, piles, culverts, pipes, floating structures, and field fortifications. The structural properties, advantages, and disadvantages of various elements and systems are discussed. Engineering guidance on the fabrication, handling, storage, transportation, connection, and erection of precast concrete structural elements is provided. Designs for two precast concrete military bridges capable of supporting military Heavy Equipment Transporters HETs are developed. These bridges can be easily transported to the construction site by existing military equipment and assembled with a minimum of time, labor, and equipment. A plan for the construction of a concrete precasting facility that will minimize the materials, manpower, and equipment necessary for mass production of the recommended precast concrete military bridges is formulated.
