Abstract:

A three-dimensional interphase exists at the boundary between polymer adhesive or matrix and substrate adherend or reinforcing fiber in adhesive joint and composite materials. To fully understand the significance of this region on the mechanical properties and durability of these materials, an interdisciplinary workshop was held. The results of that workshop were to identify the known and unknown relationship between interphase parameters and mechanical thermal and chemical durability of adhesive joints and advanced composite materials. This report serves as both an assessment of the state-of-the-art of the interphase and a consensus for future research. Author
