Abstract:

The historical facts that brought todays scientists to use optical communication systems, and the possible advantages or disadvantages of using fiber optic transmission medium were investigated. The requirements and characteristics of the optical links and the problems related to their implementation were studied. Todays applications as well as the future ones are discussed.
