Abstract:

The purpose of this report is to recommend the requirements of a technique which would enable bio-acousticians to estimate the locality of the source of underwater biological signals in the natural environment. These recommendations were partly based upon consultations with numerous other persons including engineers and physicists inside and outside of NUWC, as well as 20 other bio-acousticians. A working model system, or precise specifications, were beyond the present undertaking. Hopefully, the ideas set forth here will lead towards completion of an adequate system which can be made available to bio-acousticians who are involved with studying underwater biological signals in the natural environment.
