The drag and lift forces acting on smooth circular cylinders in an impulsively-started flow have been measured through the use of a vertical water tunnel. The drag and lift coefficients were found to depend on the Reynolds number and the normalized displacement of the fluid from the start. It is recommended that these experiments be extended to higher Reynolds numbers to substantiate further the Reynolds number dependence. Author
