A Study of the Shear Strength of Normally Consolidated Ecuadorian Varved Clay and its Sensitivity to Remolding.

Consolidated-undrained CU triaxial compression tests, with pore pressure measurement, were employed in the study of the shear strength characteristics or normally consolidated varved clay from Guayaquil, Ecuador. Undisturbed samples were tested to obtain values of undrained shear strength, the effective stress envelope, stress-strain relationships and pore pressure build up. The mineralogical composition of the samples was determined through X-ray Diffraction and Thermogravimetric Analysis techniques. CU tests for remolded samples provided data for a comparison of undrained shear strengths and an evaluation of sensitivity.
