Abstract:

In this note, kinematic equations are derived which describe the motion of a reference point on a submarine target relative to an arbitrary coordinate system. In these equations, the independent variables are known or measurable quantities. In addition to the kinematic equations, analytical expressions relating the error variation in the computed variables to the error variation in the measured quantities are derived. The kinematic equations and the corresponding error equations can be employed in error sensitivity analyses to determine the necessary measurement accuracies. However, the analytical expressions are very complex and in many applications the computations would be prohibitive. It is suggested that Monte Carlo simulation techniques would yield equivalent results with much less practical difficulty. Author
