ZrO2, as derived from three zircon source minerals and many process variations, was physically and chemically analyzed. The impact of the ZrO2 variations obtained was then evaluated in both dry and wet blended lead zirconate-lead titanate, high drive type piezoelectric compositions. Proper purification and blending of the ZrO2 is shown to yield PZ-PT material with uniform low and high drive piezoelectric behavior. Single precipitated ZrO2 and dry blending are shown to be highly variable processes. Author
